It’s been a busy couple of weeks at the hub. Here’s the latest, from news of the devastating fire in Dunkerque to a call out for more volunteers for the ABC Free Shop. Thank you for your support!
Sending aid following the Dunkerque fire
Since the news of the large-scale fire in Dunkerque in early April and its subsequent closure, ABC along with supporters and partners pulled together to send emergency aid to the once again displaced people in Northern France. Most of these people are now homeless and sleeping on the streets.
As part of our ongoing commitment to refugees in this region we bought and sent sleeping bags, food, underwear, joggers and shoes. Together with RAFT and RAISE and your many amazing aid donations we were able to send two vans of blankets and sleeping bags. We have another vanload going this weekend.
Refugees gaining new skills
In a new initiative, we were excited this month to have our first two refugees and a volunteer become Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) certified. This certification qualifies them to test all the fantastic electrical appliances we receive. It will also enable these two refugees to go on to find work as PAT testers.
We are working with Shazia, Salina and BHN Movable feast (pop up kitchens for refugees and AS) to give refugees the chance gain experience in the UK catering world, share their amazing cooking skills and become trained in health and hygiene. All with the aim of gaining the experience needed to find a job.
Turning a house into a home for refugees
The team has been busy helping Borderlands in Bristol kit out a house that has been donated to house refugees providing a step up and chance for independence.
We got our Charity status!
Finally, we are an official charity. This positively impacts our work and the team in lots of different ways - more of which we’ll update on soon.
Free Shop - now open three days a week
The new opening hours for the Free Shop at the Hub are:
Wed 11-2 - women only
Please ensure you refer users using the referral cards or by calling us on 0117 336 8441.
Can you volunteer in the Free Shop?
We desperately need volunteers to commit to one session a week in the Free Shop. The hours are 10am-3pm. Want to get involved or know someone who can? Please get in touch for a chat about what’s involved.
Come and see us at the Hub
The Hub is not only a free shop - it is a space for refugees and asylum seekers, volunteers and mentors to meet, drink tea, relax, volunteer and be part of a loving community. Drop in and see us to find out what’s going on and how you can help.
Fundraising and fantastic donations
On Saturday 29th April, two fabulous fundraisers generated awareness and funds to support our work.
A pop-up charity shop at the Hub raised £871 by selling donations that weren’t suitable to be used as aid but were really great quality.
Over in Wales, the two day Love in the Hills festival at the wonderful Coed Hills raised £3000 - half of that for ABC and the other half to another Bristol refugee charity.
Massive thanks to Beth Sanders and everyone who volunteered at the events. You’re amazing!
In other news, we’ve been donated two computers for the hub. One is for admin, making our lives so much simpler, and the other is available for hub users to access the internet and printer.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
A huge thank you to everyone who has put time, love and energy into ABC. You’re making a big difference!
