Jamaica Street Wall Mural – ABC is coming for you!
By Imogen McIntosh, founder & CEO of ABC
It’s been just over a year since we started officially supporting the refugee and asylum seeker population in Bristol - and what a year it’s been.
As we celebrate ABC's first anniversary and to mark the beginning of Refugee Week 2018, we are incredibly privileged to have been gifted the Jamaica Street Wall Mural for a month by the kind folk at the People’s Republic of Stokes Croft.
The brief for our mural has changed many times, but we have settled on depicting the Hub, our home, as a demonstration of what we do, who we are and what we want to build for the future.
Two wonderful artists, Juliette Vandame and Tiff Chau, have taken on the epic challenge of designing the outline for the wall. At 48 feet by 10 feet this is no mean feat!
Juliette and Tiff, along with our volunteers, have been pivotal in organising a (growing) team of artists who want to get involved. The first brush strokes will be applied on 16thJune 2018, with the mural coming to life over that weekend and beyond.
Our main wish is to raise awareness among the wider community about what we do, with the aim of encouraging inclusivity, integration and involvement. At the same time, reassuring refugees and asylum seekers in Bristol that there is somewhere they can access supplies, support and sanctuary.
As part of the programme, we’re including some of our refugee and volunteer voices. We want to bring to life what the Hub means to people and some silhouettes are being drawn in to the main Hub image to help us do this.
Reading their stories and insights has been truly humbling. I hope they will help others connect with the personal experiences and reality of some of our fellow humans’ lives.
To tell the stories, we will be using digital art - QR codes designed by the amazing Emma Lilwall. We’d love for people to engage and share on socials as far and wide as possible. Use the hashtag #SupportAndSupplies and #ABCHubBristol if you can.
This is the first time we have taken on anything this public and so we’re really excited – and a bit nervous – to see how it all unfolds. Needless to say, we’re wishing for good weather this weekend. Please do a sun dance for us!
Make sure you connect back herein the next few days to see how we’re doing. We’ll have lots of updates for you to check in and support the work we do.
In the meantime, if you’d like to donate and help refugees and asylum seekers in Bristol gain access to the everyday essentials that we all take for granted – whether it be socks or saucepans – please click here. It all helps and is appreciated so much.
Peace and love from all of us at ABC.
Now let’s get our paint on!
